When an Entitlement Line Item in FlexNet Operations (FNO) is set to Inactive or Obsolete, whether it is removed from the Cloud License Server (CLS) depends on your system configuration settings.
#1: Marking a Line Item as "Inactive"
By default, marking a line item Inactive does not remove it from CLS.
CLS can continue serving the inactive line item until the license expires (if it hasn’t reached the expiry date).
#2: Control Removal Using Configuration Option
Go to the relevant system configuration and check this setting: Remove licenses from CLS when line item state is changed to Inactive/Obsolete.
- If this option is enabled—The line item will be removed from CLS immediately when set to Inactive or Obsolete (even if usage/consumption exists).
- If this option is disabled (default behavior)—The line item may remain available on CLS until it expires.
#3: Restoring the Line Item Back to "Deployed"
If you change the line item from Inactive to Deployed, and CLS is provisioned with it, the full quantity becomes available again in CLS.
#4: Understanding "Obsolete" State Availability/Behavior
- The Obsolete option is tied to another configuration: “Allow state change of entities to obsolete”
- Depending on this configuration, entitlements/line items that were already activated may still be usable until license expiration, even if marked Inactive/Obsolete.
- Default—Inactive line items are not automatically removed from CLS; they can still be served until expiry.
- If “Remove licenses from CLS…” is enabled—Inactive/Obsolete line items are removed immediately from CLS.
- If restored to Deployed—The line item’s full quantity becomes available again on CLS (if provisioned).
- Obsolete behavior/availability—Depends on the “Allow state change…to obsolete” configuration.
