On macOS systems, certain service accounts may be discovered and represented as user entities. These accounts typically follow a standardized naming convention that begins with an underscore (_).
Because these accounts perform background system tasks, they may appear frequently in usage analytics and reporting. This can cause confusion, as they do not represent real end-user activity.
In SAM Core, these service accounts may appear:
- Under Users, associated with multiple devices
- As the most recent or most frequent user on macOS computers
For example, a service account such as _accessoryupdater@HostName may be listed across several macOS devices.
User exclusion configuration for macOS service accounts
-
Audit existing user accounts
Review all user entries to identify whether any valid accounts contain names beginning with an underscore (_). These typically represent macOS service accounts and may appear as frequent users in reporting metrics. - Apply exclusion filters
If no valid user accounts include underscores, update the exclusion settings by adding the following patterns under:- Settings > SAM Core Settings > Asset Management
- Fields to update
- User accounts to exclude from inventory data
- User accounts to exclude from calculation of most recent user
- User accounts to exclude from calculation of most frequent user
Recommended exclusion values
-
%NoLoggedOnUser%,%[_]%,[_]%
Handling valid accounts with underscores
If your environment includes valid user accounts that contain underscores, exclusion patterns should be reviewed carefully to avoid filtering out legitimate users.
NOTE: Users added to the exclusion list will not be retroactively removed from historical data. Manual deletion or archival may be necessary to fully eliminate their presence from the system.
