You may see unregistered nodes in your Amazon EKS cluster and find cloud‑init errors when you connect to an EC2 worker node. This issue usually happens when the user data script fails during instance initialization. The errors indicate that cloud‑init can’t parse the script because of a missing quotation mark or another formatting problem. Checking your logs helps you confirm the cause and correct the user data.
Follow these steps to confirm the error and fix the configuration:
- Connect to the EC2 instance
Use SSH to connect to one of the affected worker nodes. - Check the cloud-init logs for parsing errors
Look for messages similar to the following in/var/log/cloud-init.logor related cloud-init files, which confirm cloud‑init couldn’t process the user data script:unexpected EOF while looking for matching '"'syntax error: unexpected end of file- Warnings about
scripts-userfailing to run
- Check the instance boot logs
Review/var/log/messagesor/var/log/cloud-init-output.logto see which part of the script caused the failure. - Verify your parameter configuration
Make sure the following settings are correct for your node group as even a single stray quote in user data can prevent cloud‑init from completing.:- Labels
- AMI
- IP configuration
- User data formatting
- Validate the user data script
Ensure the script is executable and contains no unclosed quotes, invalid characters, or incomplete blocks. If you’re using a multiline heredoc, confirm it uses matching delimiters.
After fixing the script and relaunching the node group, new worker nodes should register correctly with the cluster and no longer show syntax or EOF errors.
