The latest Windows Snow Inventory Agents now include visible PowerShell scripts so you can review how additional scans collect deeper Microsoft SQL Server data. This article explains what the SQL Server scan script gathers and what it does not collect.
What the script collects
The script inventories Microsoft SQL Server installations by reading data from the Windows registry, Windows services, and SQL Server error logs. It gathers the following details:
SQL Server instance details
- Instance name: The name of each SQL Server instance found.
- Version and edition: The version (for example, 2019, 2022, 2025) and the edition (for example, Standard, Enterprise) of each instance.
- Patch level: The specific patch or update level installed.
- Language: The language of the SQL Server installation.
- Product code: The GUID used by Windows Installer for the SQL Server product.
- SQL path and program directory: File system paths to SQL Server binaries and program files.
- Service status: Whether the SQL Server service is running, stopped, and so on.
- Service image path: The path to the SQL Server executable used by the Windows service.
- Executable file properties: Creation time, file size, and file language of the SQL Server executable.
Registry and uninstall information
- Registry keys: Information from registry locations related to SQL Server and Snow Software.
- Uninstall string: The command used to uninstall SQL Server from the system.
- Estimated size: The size of the SQL Server installation as reported in the registry.
- Install date: The date SQL Server was installed.
- Publisher: The publisher of the SQL Server installation (typically Microsoft).
- Current version details: Additional metadata from the registry’s uninstall section.
- SQL version and edition: Version and edition information stored in registry metadata.
What the script does not collect
- License keys or activation keys
The script includes no commands or logic that read, extract, or report SQL Server license keys.
