When attempting to view or edit a license file under License > License File Summary > Edit, the license file is unavailable, and an error message appears. Although using the License Reread option (as suggested in the error message) might be attempted, this does not always resolve the issue.
This issue can occur when an environment has been upgraded or migrated to new servers. During the license file read process, a hard copy of the license file is stored in the application's \DATA\ directory. When accessing the Edit tab, the application looks for this file based on its record in the database. If the file is missing, the system fails to retrieve the license details.
If pointing the new installation to the old \DATA\ directory is not possible, you must copy the missing license file(s) to the new environment.
- Locate the DATA directory:
If you are unsure of the location, either run the FlexNet Site Configurator and go to Step 2 of 6, or open:
-
<Install Directory>\FLEXnet\manager\admin\config\site.properties
-
- Look for the
data.dir= value
- Look for the
- Check the license folder:
Navigate to: <Install Directory>\FLEXnet\manager\data\rep\lic\chunks\
If this folder does not contain any files, the license file is missing and must be restored from either:
-
- A backup of the
\DATA\directory, or - The old
\DATA\directory from the previous environment
- A backup of the
- (Optional) Identify the correct license file using SQL:
If multiple license files are in use, run the following query in SQL Management Studio on the Admin database to find the correct file name:
SELECT *
FROM MGR_LICENSEFILE lf
JOIN MGR_LICENSESERVER ls ON ls.id = lf.LicenseServer_id
WHERE ls.[name] LIKE '%LicenseServerName%'
OR ls.hostName LIKE '%LicenseServerHostName%'
Use the postTransferLocation column in the result to confirm the file you need.
- Restore the missing file:
Copy the identified license file from the old \DATA\ directory (or backup) into the new directory:
<Install Directory>\FLEXnet\manager\data\rep\lic\chunks\
- Validate in the UI:
Navigate back to License > License File Summary > Edit. The license file should now be viewable and editable.
