Shutdown hours help you reduce compute costs by scaling your cluster to zero during predefined off-hours. However, GKE clusters that use shielded nodes do not support shutdown hours. Knowing this limitation helps you plan safe scheduling and ensures the Ocean controller remains available when the cluster restarts.
Shutdown hours overview
Shutdown hours let you build a weekly schedule for when your cluster runs. During running hours, Ocean keeps the cluster active. During off-hours, Ocean scales the cluster down to zero, so you pay only for the compute you actually use.
Shutdown hours work best for non-production environments such as development, testing, and staging.
Key points:
- Running hours appear in your local timezone, but Ocean applies them using UTC.
- You can define running hours in 30‑minute increments.
- When running hours end, Ocean scales the cluster to zero.
- When running hours begin, Ocean brings up the minimum required nodes and resumes normal autoscaling.
Why shutdown hours are not supported for GKE shielded nodes
Shielded nodes use additional security protections during node boot and registration. Because of this, shutdown hours are not compatible with GKE clusters that run shielded nodes.
If you use shutdown hours with shielded nodes:
- The Ocean controller must be running when off-time ends.
- The controller cannot run on a node managed by Ocean during shutdown hours because Ocean scales those nodes down to zero.
- Without the controller, the Kubernetes node registration process cannot complete, and the cluster cannot restart cleanly.
To avoid issues, ensure the controller runs on a node not managed by Ocean.
How the controller behaves during shutdown hours
Even though shutdown hours aren’t supported for shielded nodes, it’s helpful to understand how the controller behaves:
- At the end of off-time, Ocean launches a single node from a virtual node group without taints.
- If all virtual node groups use taints, Ocean falls back to the default virtual node group unless it is configured as template-only.
- Once a node launches and registers with Kubernetes, the controller is scheduled on that node.
- The controller reports unscheduled pods, and Ocean autoscaling continues as expected.
If shielded nodes are enabled, you must host the controller externally because Ocean-managed nodes are unavailable during off-time.
Shutdown hours per virtual node group
For supported clouds, you can define shutdown hours per VNG through the Flexera API.
Cluster‑level shutdown hours always take priority.
If the cluster is shut down, VNG‑specific wake-up events do not occur until the cluster is active again.
