When you manage workloads on Amazon EKS or Google GKE with Flexera Ocean, it helps to understand how Ocean’s draining timeout works with Kubernetes’ termination grace period. Both settings control how much time your pods and nodes have to shut down gracefully.
Draining timeout in Ocean
The draining timeout (drainingTimeout) is a Flexera Ocean setting. It defines how long Ocean waits for a node to drain before the node is terminated.
-
Default: 300 seconds
-
A longer value gives your applications more time to complete a graceful shutdown.
Termination grace period in Kubernetes
The termination grace period (terminationGracePeriodSeconds) is a Kubernetes Pod‑level setting. It defines how long Kubernetes waits before stopping the pod’s processes.
-
Default: 30 seconds
-
Use this when your application needs more time to close connections or flush data.
How both settings work together
If a pod needs time to shut down, set its terminationGracePeriodSeconds value. Then, in Ocean, set a draining timeout that is equal to or greater than that value.
This ensures that Ocean does not terminate the node before Kubernetes finishes shutting down the pod.
Example
If a pod requires 600 seconds to close connections gracefully, set:
-
terminationGracePeriodSeconds: 600 -
Ocean
drainingTimeout: greater than 600 seconds
This gives your workload enough time to shut down without interruption.
