Summary
Discussion on possible causes and resolutions for warning -3114 that can occur during build time
Symptoms
When building an InstallShield project, the following error may occur:
'Warning -3114: Application path does not contain destination of associated component <COMPONENTNAME>.'
<COMPONENTNAME> contains the name of the Component that caused this warning.
Cause
- This error occurs when an Application Path entry was created in the Advanced Settings section of the Components view, but no Application Path was specified.
- Because an Application Path is also a registry entry, this error might result if a registry path, such as the following, is created but is missing the path entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
Resolution
Resolution to Cause A
To correct this, set the Application Path entry by following these steps:
- Select the Components view.
- Double-click the component specified in the warning message to expand its tree.
- Double-click Advanced Settings to expand the node.
- Click Application Paths.
- In the File column in the right panel, select the file you would like to create a key for.
- In the Application Path column, enter the paths to the file's dependencies or select a Windows Installer folder property from the list rather than hard-coding a path. Separate multiple paths with a semicolon (;).
- Click OK.
The easiest way to specify an application path for your component is to use the component's key file as the application path. To do this, you first need to set an executable as the component's key file. This can be done by right-clicking the file in the Files view beneath the Component and selecting Set Key File. A gold key icon is displayed to the left of the file to indicate that it is now the key file. Next, right-click on the Application Paths property sheet and select Key File Application Path.
You can create App Path keys for other files in your component by repeating the process described above.
Resolution to Cause B
If you are manually creating this registry entry in the project, specify a path entry by following these steps:
- Select the Registry view.
- Select All Application Data from the View Filter drop-down box at the top of the panel to display all registry entries being created within the project.
- Locate the following registry entry that the project is creating:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths - Modify this entry so a key is being created within App Paths. For example, the following would resolve this warning if notepad.exe was the key file of my Component:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\notepad.exe
Additional Information
- Additional information on creating an Application Paths key can be found in the InstallShield Help Library topic Specifying an Application Path for a Component
- This error is briefly documented in the InstallShield Help Library topic Build Errors and Warnings.
- For more information on key files, refer to InstallShield Help Library topic Setting Component Key Files.
