Summary

Modal Dialog Style Bit causes issue with the SetupProgress dilaog box

Synopsis

Under certain circumstances when the "SetupProgress" dialog box is displayed it stays like that forever, appears to hang or in other words is not refreshed and does not advance. The Button 'Cancel' can be used to end the install.

Discussion

This situation applies to Basic MSI projects created with the Professional and Premier version of InstallShield.

Setting the property Modal to 'True' on the SetupProgress dialog may cause unexpected results. When this property is true the Progress Bar control does not advance and the install appears to hang and become unresponsive. The property Modal is not expected to be set to 'True'.

The property Modal is exposed when looking at the language variant in the Dialogs view. Navigate to User Interface > Dialogs in the Installation Designer view.

Microsoft documentation indicates:

Form.Modal Property

When a form is displayed modally, no input (keyboard or mouse click) can occur except to objects on the modal form. The program must
hide or close a modal form (usually in response to some user action) before input to another form can occur. Forms that are displayed
modally are typically used as dialog boxes in an application.

Modal Dialog Style Bit

If this bit is set, the dialog box is modal, other dialogs of the same application cannot be put on top of it, and the dialog keeps
the control while it is running. If this bit is not set, the dialog is modeless, other dialogs of the same application may be moved
on top of it. After a modeless dialog is created and displayed, the user interface returns control to the installer. The installer
then calls the user interface periodically to update the dialog and to give it a chance to process the messages. As soon as this is
done, the control is returned to the installer.

Note There should be no modeless dialogs in a wizard sequence, since this would return control to the installer, ending the wizard
sequence prematurely.

Workaround

Set the property Modal to "false"
