Symptoms

The InstallShield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. Error loading type library/DLL
Cause
This issue may occur if one or more of the following files are missing from the Windows\System folder:
- Stdole32.tlb
- Stdole2.tlb
- Stdole.tlb
The above Stdole files should exist in the Windows\System directory for the application to successfully install. The following steps explain how to locate the missing Stdole file and extract it from either your computer's hard drive or the Windows Installation CD
Resolution
Determine the missing Stdole file(s).
- Click Start > Find > Files or Folders.
- In the Named field, type Stdole*.tlb to search for the missing file(s).
- In the Look in field, click drive C:. Select the Include subfolders check box.
- Write down which files are missing. You will use the file name(s) in the following steps.
Use the System File Checker utility to extract the missing Stdole file(s) to the Windows\System directory.
- Insert the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
- On the taskbar, click Start >Run.
- In the Open box, type SFC, and then click OK.
- In the System File Checker dialog, select Extract one file from installation disk.
- In the Specify the system file you would like to restore field, type the missing Stdole filename, and then click Start.
6. In the Extract File dialog, type drive:\WIN98 in the Restore from field, where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains your Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM.
NOTE: If your computer has an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) installation of Windows 98, the Windows installation files may also be found in the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS folder.
7. In the Save file in field, type C:\Windows\System, and then click OK.
8. In the Backup File dialog, click OK. If you receive the following message, click Yes:
The backup folder does not exist. Do you want to create it?
9. You receive the following message:
The file has been successfully extracted.
Click OK, and then click Close.
10. Repeat steps 2 through 9 for each missing Stdole file.
11. Restart the computer.
