Summary

Symptoms

When building an InstallShield Express project, the following error may occur:

Error -6210: An error occurred building COM .NET Interop information for Component [1].?

Cause

During the build process, InstallShield Express calls the Microsoft file regasm.exe of the .NET .dll to create a registry (.reg) file. After the .reg file is created, the .reg file is imported. The resulting registry entries are then stored in the Registry table of the .msi database. If either of these steps fails, this error occurs.

Resolution

To resolve this error, make sure that the file associated with the component [1] mentioned in the error message is a .NET .dll. If you are unsure, contact the software developer who created the .dll for verification.

If the File Is Not a .NET .dll File

If the file is not a .NET .dll file, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Files view.

2. In the Feature list, select All Features.

3. In the Destination computer's folder window, select the location of the folder that might contain the file that caused the error. Note that the name of the component [1] mentioned in the error message is similar to the name of the file that caused the error.

4. In the Destination computer's folders window, right-click the file and select Properties. The Properties dialog box opens.

5. Click the COM & .NET Settings tab.

6. In the Scan at Build list, select None.

7. In the Application File list, make sure that the option selected is blank.

8. Clear the Installer Class check box.

9. Clear the COM Interop check box.

10. Click OK.

11. Rebuild your installation.

If the File Is a .NET .dll File

If the file is a .NET .dll, make sure that the .NET assembly has classes or other data types that can be exported for COM Interop.
