Summary
When building a Visual Studio solution, that contains an InstallShield Project, using Microsoft's Team Foundation Server (TFS), a build error might be encountered on 64 bit machines. This article includes a solution.Symptoms
When building a Visual Studio solution, that contains an InstallShield Project, using Microsoft's Team Foundation Server (TFS), the following build error might be encountered on 64 bit machines:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\2011\InstallShield.targets (68): The "InstallShield.Tasks.InstallShield" task could not be loaded from the assembly C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\2011\InstallShield.Tasks.dll. Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\2011\InstallShield.Tasks.dll' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format. Confirm that the <UsingTask> declaration is correct, that the assembly and all its dependencies are available, and that the task contains a public class that implements Microsoft.Build.Framework.ITask.
Cause
The build error is caused when the 64-bit version of MSBuild fails to load the InstallShield.Tasks.dll file which is a 32-bit file.Resolution
To resolve this, the build definition for your InstallShield project needs to be configured so that the 32-bit version of MSBuild is used to load the InstallShield.Tasks.dll file.
To select the 32-bit version of MSBuild:
1. Select the Build Definition in Team Explorer
2. Right click and select Edit Build Definition
3. Click the Process tab
4. Under the Advanced node, find the MSBuild Platform setting
5. Change the MSBuild Platform setting to x86.
NOTE: If you are using a 32-bit build machine, you can select either Auto or x86 for the MSBuild Platform setting.
