Answer
feature is the name given to the feature by the software publisher. Feature names must contain only letters, numbers, and underscore characters. Letters in the feature name are case insensitive by default. If case sensitivity is desired, see LM_A_LICENSE_CASE_SENSITIVE in C/C++ Function Reference.
Additional Information
The hyphen is a character used by FlexNet Publisher internally as a delimiter for various purposes. It was determined many years ago that the use of hyphen in a feature name would cause severe problems with the products internal use of hyphen. Therefore, it was documented quite clearly that hyphen in feature name was not supported.
