This article explains why passing the -Dsun.java2d.dpiaware parameter to a Java process fails to set the dpiAware element in the Java manifest for Java 7 and 8

Symptoms

When passing the -Dsun.java2d.dpiaware parameter to a Java 7 or 8 process, for example -Dsun.java2d.dpiaware=false, the dpiAware element does not get set correctly and the application's window may not be properly scaled.

Cause

This problem is a known issue in Java versions 1.7 and 1.8 (The problem does not exist in version 1.6). For more information on this bug, please refer to the JDK Bug Report.
