Hotfix is available: Visual Studio becomes unresponsive after integrating InstallShield 2015Cause
Integrating InstallShield 2015 with Visual Studio will cause this issue to occur. Specifically, interacting with an InstallShield project through Visual Studio especially in regards to the Files and Folders View will cause Visual Studio to become unresponsive. In many cases, the Visual Studio progress bar in the lower left corner can be seen half full.Steps To Reproduce
- Install Visual Studio 2010+.
- Install InstallShield 2015.
- Create a new setup project inside of Visual Studio.
- Navigate to the Files and Folders view.
- Attempt to add a file.
- Note Visual Studio IDE is visually unresponsive. Keyboard shortcuts will still work, but GUI interaction is not correctly updated.
Resolution
An InstallShield 2015 hotfix for this issue is attached.To apply the fix, follow the steps below:
- Close Visual Studio
- Make a backup copy of \Program Files (x86)\InstallShield\2015\System\FrmWrkLib.dll.
- Extract FrmWrkLib.dll from the attached zip file to the path.
- Reopen Visual Studio.

This hotfix should resolve the hanging and unresponsiveness revolving around InstallShield 2015 integration with supported versions of Visual Studio. InstallShield 2015 supports Visual Studio 2010+.Related KB Articles
