Snow Commander provides access to a set of pre-configured Azure public images to create services in the Service Catalog. However, if your organization needs an image that is not part of the default selection, you can add it manually by editing the appropriate configuration file.
-
Locate the configuration file for custom Azure public images:
\Program Files\Embotics\Commander\tomcat\common\classes\arm-images.custom.xml -
Refer to the default image listing for syntax:
\Program Files\Embotics\Commander\tomcat\common\classes\arm-images.xml
Do not modifyarm-images.xmldirectly, as it is overwritten during upgrades. -
Copy a line from
arm-images.xmlintoarm-images.custom.xmland edit its values. Adding a new image requires the following six parameters:- image name: This is the name visible in Commander when adding the image. Choose a distinctive, clear name.
- region: Specify the Azure region for the VM, matching Azure’s values exactly. Ensure your subscription is authorized for this region.
- publisher: Provide the Publisher ID from Azure. Values are case-sensitive.
- offer: Enter the Offer name (Product ID) from Azure.
- sku: Provide the Plan ID for the image.
- osDiskSizeGb: Set the OS disk size in gigabytes, meeting the minimum required size.
-
Validate image details from Azure marketplace or use a site such as https://az-vm-image.info/ for accurate values. Confirm case-sensitivity and ensure all parameters match Azure’s URN listing.
-
Edit the
arm-images.custom.xmlfile with the correct values for your selected image (e.g., Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS). -
Save your changes. Synchronize the Azure inventory in Commander to make the new image available:
- Navigate to Views > Inventory.
- Right-click the Azure account and select Synchronize Inventory.
The image will appear in Commander after synchronization completes and can then be added to the Service Catalog.
Troubleshooting
-
Image does not appear after edit:
Verify that all values inarm-images.custom.xmlexactly match Azure’s case-sensitive URN components. Use resources like https://az-vm-image.info/ for confirmation. -
Region is missing in Commander:
Ensure the specified region is enabled in Commander and supported by the Azure account:- Go to Views > Inventory, expand the Azure account, and confirm the region’s presence.
- If missing, right-click the Azure account, select Select Regions, and enable the region.
-
Image disappears after upgrade:
Avoid adding images toarm-images.xml, as this file is overwritten during upgrades. Always add custom images toarm-images.custom.xml. Re-adding an image to this file resolves issues after upgrade. -
Account not authorized for region:
Check deployment permissions by selecting Create for the image in Azure Marketplace. Azure will display supported regions for your account.
Outcome
After the inventory synchronization, the added Azure public image becomes available in Snow Commander for inclusion in the Service Catalog.
