Allowing Kubernetes pods to tolerate all taints

Some workloads in your AKS, EKS, or GKE cluster require high availability and must run even when nodes have taints applied. If a pod doesn’t tolerate a taint, Kubernetes blocks it from being scheduled on that node. You can prevent this issue by adding a universal toleration to your workloads.

Why universal tolerations help

A universal toleration lets your pods tolerate any taint that exists on a node. This ensures your critical workloads always have a place to run, even when the cluster uses taints for operational, performance, or placement reasons.

Example universal toleration

You can add a toleration similar to the following to your workloads:

tolerations:
  - operator: "Exists"
``

This allows the pod to tolerate all taints on any node.
