"Failed to perform scale up for virtual node group" error in Ocean for AKS

Title

Ocean for AKS may fail to scale up a Virtual Node Group (VNG) with the following error:

Failed to perform scale up for virtual node group <vng-name>. This account does not have the credentials needed for scaling node pools in Azure, please add the needed credentials to the Azure account related to Ocean.

This error indicates that the Azure identity configured in the Ocean Azure account does not have sufficient permissions to modify the AKS node pool.

Solution

To resolve the issue, ensure that the Service Principal configured in the Spot Azure account has the required permissions.

Step 1 – Verify the Correct Identity

Identify the Service Principal (App Registration) configured in the Spot Azure account.
Confirm that role assignments are applied to this exact identity.

Step 2 – Update the Custom Role

Ensure the role assigned includes the permission as per https://docs-spot.flexera.com/administration/api/spot-policy-aks-azure

Step 3 – Verify Scope of Role Assignment

It is recommended to configure the role at the subscription level only. Please refer to doc: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/role-based-access-control/role-assignments-portal

Please note after updating or assigning permissions, allow up to 60 minutes for Azure RBAC changes to propagate before re-testing scaling.
