In some cases, virtual servers running in a VMware environment appear as Device Type: Physical in the Economics Report. This happens when the discovery process collects only operating system (OS)–level data and does not connect to the VMware layer.
If VMware credentials are not configured, the platform cannot identify virtual machines at the hypervisor level. When discovery uses only OS credentials, it classifies all devices as physical.
To ensure VMware virtual machines are correctly identified as Device Type: Virtual, follow these steps:
- Verify VMware credentials
- Confirm that VMware (vCenter or ESXi) credentials are entered in the discovery configuration.
- If credentials are missing, add them to enable virtual-level data collection.
- Rescan the environment
- Request a rescan of the devices after credentials have been added.
- Once the scan completes, the Device Type field in the Economics Report will update to reflect the correct virtual classification.
After VMware credentials are added and the environment is rescanned, servers hosted on ESXi or vCenter will correctly display as Virtual in the Economics Report.
