Fix the “Spotinst SDK library is required” error when using Ansible

Title

When you create an Elastigroup with Ansible, the playbook may fail with an error that says the Spotinst SDK library is required. This can happen even when you already installed the library. This article explains why this occurs and how you can fix it by updating the Python interpreter Ansible uses.

Typical error message:

TASK [create elastigroup] *****************************
fatal: [localhost]: FAILED! => {"changed": false, "msg": "the Spotinst SDK library is required. (pip install spotinst_sdk2)"}

This error usually means Ansible is using a Python interpreter where the spotinst_sdk2 package is not installed.

Solution

Follow these steps to confirm the Python interpreter Ansible uses and configure Ansible to use the correct one.

Check which Python Ansible is using
Run the following command from the machine where you run Ansible:
ansible localhost -a 'which python'
Note the path that Ansible returns. This is the Python interpreter Ansible is using.
Verify the Spotinst SDK library is installed for that interpreter
Use the Python path you saw in step 1 and run the appropriate package command, for example:
/path/to/python -m pip show spotinst_sdk2
- If the package is not found, install it for that interpreter:
  /path/to/python -m pip install spotinst_sdk2 ``
Configure Ansible to use the correct Python interpreter
If Ansible is using the wrong Python version, you can explicitly set the interpreter using the ansible_python_interpreter setting. You can do this in one of these places, depending on how you manage your Ansible configuration:
- In ansible.cfg under the [defaults] section:
  [defaults] ansible_python_interpreter = /path/to/python
- Or in your inventory for a specific host or group:
  [local] localhost ansible_python_interpreter=/path/to/python
Run the playbook again
After you set the Python interpreter and confirm that spotinst_sdk2 is installed for that interpreter, run your Elastigroup playbook again. The task that creates the Elastigroup should now complete without the Spotinst SDK error.

Outcome

After you configure Ansible to use the correct Python interpreter and ensure the spotinst_sdk2 package is installed for that interpreter, the Elastigroup creation task should run successfully and the “Spotinst SDK library is required” error should no longer appear.
