When working with the Flexera APIs, especially for the first time or after a break, it’s useful to preview API responses before writing scripts. The built-in testing functionality in the API documentation allows you to make sample calls and inspect the returned data. This helps you understand how to work with the response format and plan your API integrations efficiently.
Prerequisites
Before using the testing feature in the API documentation, you must have the following:
Required access
- API access permissions
Ensure your Flexera One user account has the necessary permissions to make API calls.
To verify or request access, go to:
Administration > Identity Management > User Management
Refresh token
- You need a valid API refresh token. If you don’t have one:
- Log in to Flexera One.
- Navigate to API Credentials under the appropriate region:
Generate an access token
Use your refresh token to generate an access token. You can do this using a tool like curl, Postman, or any REST client.
For more details, see Flexera One API Authentication.
Example using curl:
curl -s -i -X POST https://login.flexera.[com|eu|au]/oidc/token \
-H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded" \
-d "grant_type=refresh_token&refresh_token=<your-refresh-token>"
NOTE: Replace [com|eu|au] with your Flexera region domain. The response will include an access_token.
Testing API calls in the documentation
Once you’ve generated an access token, you can begin testing API calls in the API documentation UI.
1. Navigate to the API docs
Go to the Flexera API documentation.
For this example, we’ll use the ITAM API: Flexera API
2. Select your region/server
At the top of the documentation page, confirm you're viewing the server that matches your organization’s region (for example, api.flexera.com, api.flexera.eu).
3. Authorize with your access token
- Click the green Authorize button.
- In the Value field, paste your access token.
- Click Authorize again.
You should see confirmation that you're logged in, along with an option to logout.
4. Try an API call
- Scroll down to the endpoint you want to test.
- Expand the endpoint section and click Try it out.
- Update any parameters as needed.
- Be sure to enter your organization ID in the appropriate field.
- Select Execute to run the test.
If successful, the response section will show a 200 OK status and return the relevant data based on the parameters you entered.
