This article addresses an issue where users are unable to log in to RightScale when a Master Account has been deleted. When SSO is enabled, users may see the following error:
“We cannot complete your request. The server responded with permission denied.”
The issue typically occurs if the Master Account associated with linked accounts has been deleted. Since RightScale accounts depend on this central Master Account, its removal prevents login and access via SSO.
How to validate
- Review recent account deletions in your environment.
- Confirm whether any deleted account was a Master Account:
- Navigate to one of the affected linked accounts.
- Open the Info section and look for the Master Account field.
- Ensure you have the necessary admin privileges to view this information.

Best practice
To prevent accidental deletion of critical accounts:
- Tag your Master Account to make it easier to identify.
- Use RightScale’s account tagging feature to flag high-importance accounts.
If the deleted account is confirmed as the Master Account, this explains the login failure. Recreate or restore the necessary Master Account and update the configuration for linked accounts accordingly.
