Deleting events in Usage Intelligence is permanent. When an event is deleted, all historical usage data for that event is permanently lost and cannot be recovered. Because of this, event deletion should be requested only after reviewing the considerations below.
Important Behavior to Understand
It is important to note the following about deleting events in Usage Intelligence.
- Deleting an event does not stop it from being sent—If your software continues to send a deleted event, Usage Intelligence will rediscover it and create it again as a new event.
- Rediscovered events start as untracked—Usage data for rediscovered events will only begin collecting after the event is explicitly set to Tracking on the Event Tracking Management tab of the Administration > Product page.
- Deleted events often reappear—In most cases we observe, deleted events continue to be sent from installations and are rediscovered shortly after deletion. This often causes the maximum event limit to be reached again soon after cleanup.
Recommended Actions Before Requesting Deletion
To prevent deleted events from reappearing and consuming event capacity again, we strongly recommend the following:
Step 1: Update Your Software to Stop Sending Unwanted Events
The most effective solution is to update your application so it no longer sends the events you plan to delete, and to ensure customers apply this update.
Step 2: Disable Automatically Enable Tracking of New Events
If stopping event generation is not possible, disable the Automatically enable tracking of new events option under Auto Approve on the Event Tracking Management tab. This prevents rediscovered events from automatically filling your tracked event limit.
Step 3: Plan Which Events You Want to Keep
Review the current event list on the Event Tracking Management tab and decide whether you want to delete:
- All untracked events, or
- A specific list of events.
Step 4: Prepare the Deletion List for Revenera Support
When submitting your request, include the following for each event:
- Event category
- Event name
- Event ID
Recommended Actions After Deletion
Shortly after Revenera Support deletes the events you specified, perform the following steps:
- Send the events you do want to track from a test installation.
- Set those events to Tracking on the Event Tracking Management tab. This ensures that desired events begin collecting data before unwanted events can consume available event capacity.
Why Repeated Deletion is Limited
Internally, every unique event name is assigned an auto-increment numeric ID that is encoded and used across multiple system components. When an event is deleted and later reappears, a new ID must be assigned, because previously used IDs cannot be safely reused.
Because this ID system has a finite capacity, event deletion cannot be performed an unlimited number of times. Repeated cycles of deletion and rediscovery can eventually exhaust the available ID space.
Next Steps
After reviewing these recommendations and preparing your event list, please raise a Revenera Support ticket to request event deletion.
