What storage costs are included

Ocean includes costs for the following storage types:

• AWS Elastic Block Store [EBS]

• Google Cloud Persistent Disk

These costs are associated with Kubernetes Persistent Volumes [PVs] and Persistent Volume Claims [PVCs] that are attached to running workloads.

How Ocean calculates storage costs

Ocean calculates storage costs using the following process:

1. Collect hourly storage usage data

   Ocean collects hourly usage information from the cloud provider, including:

   • Storage volume size

   • Volume identifier

   • Hourly storage price
     
     

2. Identify pods using persistent storage

   Ocean identifies all pods in the cluster that reference a PVC. Each PVC is mapped to its corresponding PV and underlying cloud storage volume.
   
   

3. Calculate PVC cost per pod

   For each pod that uses a PVC, Ocean calculates storage cost using the following logic:

   • Pod runtime multiplied by the hourly storage price of the associated volume

   Storage pricing is based on the hourly data collected in the first step.
   
   

4. Aggregate storage costs

   Ocean aggregates PVC costs:

   • Per pod

   • Per workload

   • Per hour

   For standalone pods, Ocean calculates and presents aggregated storage costs at the cluster level.

Storage that is not included

By default, Kubernetes uses non‑persistent or temporary storage when a workload does not define a PVC. This data is stored on the node’s local filesystem and exists only while the container is running.

When the container stops, this temporary data is removed. Because this storage is ephemeral and not backed by a cloud provider volume, it is not included in Ocean storage cost analysis.
