AWS uses different lifecycle labels to show how your on‑demand instances are billed. Understanding the difference between OD(SP) and OD(RI) helps you track commitment coverage and identify how AWS applies Savings Plans and Reserved Instances.
OD(SP)
OD(SP) indicates an on‑demand instance that uses a Savings Plan commitment.
Savings Plans offer flexible pricing in exchange for a one‑ or three‑year commitment to a specific hourly spend. AWS automatically applies Savings Plan coverage to eligible usage when commitment capacity is available.
If the instance meets the criteria for your Savings Plan, AWS bills it under the plan instead of standard on‑demand pricing.
OD(RI)
OD(RI) indicates an on‑demand instance that uses a Reserved Instance commitment.
Reserved Instances provide a billing discount for specific instance families, sizes, and Regions over a one‑ or three‑year term. Like Savings Plans, AWS automatically applies RI coverage to eligible on‑demand instances when the commitment matches and has available capacity.
