Why instances may not be gracefully terminated when AWS issues a 2‑minute termination notice
AWS sends a 2‑minute warning before it terminates spot instances. However, the warning doesn’t always last the full 2 minutes. In many cases, it can be shortened to only a few seconds.
 
When AWS decides to terminate an instance, the instance status updates immediately, even if the termination notice isn’t delivered for the full duration. Elastigroup and Ocean monitor instance status changes so they can quickly launch a replacement. This requires available capacity in the AWS Spot market.
 
When capacity is limited, there may not be enough time to run your shutdown script or complete a graceful termination workflow before AWS forcibly shuts the instance down.

Improve availability

You can increase your chances of receiving replacement capacity by:
  • Adding more instance types to the group or cluster
  • Including more Availability Zones
  • Enabling fallback to On‑Demand Instances
These options allow the system more flexibility when replacing terminated nodes.
