You may see an unknown health check status for a target group when Flexera Elastigroup can't confirm the instance’s health. This usually happens while an instance is starting, when AWS hasn’t returned enough data, or when the grace period ends before the instance becomes healthy. Understanding these causes helps you decide whether you need to adjust your configuration or investigate further in AWS.
The instance is still initializing
An instance in the initial lifecycle state is still registering with the target group or completing its first health check.
This state can temporarily report as unknown until AWS finishes evaluating the instance.
AWS hasn’t returned enough data
Flexera Elastigroup saves only one health status per instance, even when multiple target groups are attached.
You may see an unknown status when:
-
AWS hasn’t returned a status for one or more target groups.
-
Only one target group exists and Elastigroup didn’t receive any data from AWS yet.
You can review the targets directly in AWS under Registered targets. See the AWS documentation.
The grace period ended before the instance became healthy
If the health check grace period expires and the instance has not yet reported a healthy status, its state may appear as unknown until autohealing replaces it.
Review autohealing configuration
Autohealing determines which service Flexera Elastigroup uses to decide if an instance should be replaced. If autohealing is misconfigured or uses a health check type that hasn’t returned data, the instance may remain in an unknown state.
Autohealing health check types
Elastigroup supports the following health check types:
-
None – No automatic replacement.
-
ELB – Classic Load Balancer health check.
-
TARGET_GROUP – Application Load Balancer target group health check.
-
EC2 – EC2 status check.
-
HCS – Flexera health check.
-
ECS – ECS cluster instance health.
-
K8S_NODE – Kubernetes node status (requires Kubernetes integration).
-
NOMAD_NODE – HashiCorp Nomad cluster node status (requires Nomad integration).
-
OpsWorks – OpsWorks layer membership verification.
Additional autohealing settings
-
Health check grace period
Set the number of seconds to allow an instance to boot and start its applications. Once the instance becomes healthy, the grace period ends and won’t be used again. -
Unhealthy duration
Set the number of seconds an instance can remain unhealthy after it has been healthy at least once before Elastigroup replaces it.
Tip: If an instance becomes unhealthy during the grace period, Elastigroup won’t terminate it. Termination only happens after the grace period ends and the unhealthy duration timer begins.
After reviewing these conditions and adjusting your AWS or autohealing configurations, you should see your target group instances report a clear healthy or unhealthy status instead of unknown
