Summary

Symptoms

When building an InstallShield project, the following error may occur:

Error -5036: Internal build error.

This error may also indicate "Fatal Error".

TFS (Microsoft Team Foundation Server) build output indicates:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\<INSTALLSHIELDVERSION>\InstallShield.targets(77,3): error : -5036: Internal build error

C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\InstallShield\<INSTALLSHIELDVERSION>\InstallShield.targets(77,3): error : Exception Caught

Cause

1. This error occurs when a problem occurred in creating the media. More specifically, it is related to creating multiple disk images, such as Disk1, Disk2, etc. This error is known to occur in very rare instances when a custom release configuration is selected in the Release Configuration panel of the Release Wizard.

Little is currently known as to why the custom release configuration can cause this error.

2. The problem has been reported using TFS to build releases when InstallShield is integrated with Visual Studio and TFS.

Resolution

1. To resolve this error, select a different release configuration in the Release Configuration panel of the Release Wizard and choose any of the other options, such as Compress all files or Leave files uncompressed and separate from the installation package.

Changing the build location to a shorter path, using a different media type, or building the project on another build machine have also been known to help resolve the issue.

2. In the reported cases involving TFS restarting the Build Agent resolved the problem. Please restart your Build Agents and continue to monitor.
