Error -6002: Error while attempting to run the custom build setup for objects

Symptoms

When building an InstallShield Express project, the following error may occur:

Error -6002: Error while attempting to run the custom build setup for objects

Cause

This error has been known to occur in the following scenarios:

1. The Access 2000 Object contains a broken link to the data file for Access 2000 or Access 2002.
2. The project is upgraded from a previous version of Express 3.x and contains a link to the BDE Merge Module. This error occurs because the upgraded project contains a reference to the old BDE Merge Module.
3. The error may also occur if you download the BDE Merge Module from the InstallShield Merge Module gallery and use it with Express 4.0.
4. The error may also occur if the file BDEDesigner.dll is not property registered or located in the <DRIVE>\Program Files\InstallShield\Express\System directory.

NOTE:<DRIVE> in the above path should be replaced by the drive letter where Express is installed.

Resolution

1. Make sure that the link in the Access 2000 Object pointing to the data file on the Access 2000/2002 or Office 2000/2002 CD is valid. The file data file should be from the Developer version of Access 2000/2002 or Office 2000/2002.

   NOTE: The Access 2000 Object in Express 4.0 and later can be used to redistribute both Access 2000 and Access 2002.

   If the link is correct and the issue persists, follow these steps to work around this issue:

   1. Copy the entire contents of the Access 2000/2002 or Office 2000/2002 Developer CD on the root drive of your development or build machine. The contents should be copied in the exact same folder structure as contained on the CD.
   2. Launch the Access 2000 Object by right clicking on it to configure it in the Redistributables view.
   3. Make the Access 2000 object point to the data file on your root drive from the path in Step 1.
   4. Rebuild the project.
2. In the Redistributables view of the Express IDE, deselect the BDE Merge Module. Then, follow these steps to remove the old BDE merge module and install the one shipped with Express 4.0 or later:
   1. Launch the Windows Add/Remove Programs (ARP) applet. (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs in the Windows environment.)
   2. Uninstall the BDE Merge Module listed in this applet. It also may be helpful to delete or move the .msm file so that Express cannot see it (in case it does not show in the ARP).
   3. Select InstallShield Express in ARP.
   4. Click the Change button. The InstallShield Installation Wizard opens. Click Next.
   5. Select the Modify option and click Next.
   6. In the Select Features panel, select the feature corresponding to your version of BDE.
   7. Complete the setup.
   8. Launch Express and create a New project.
   9. Open the Redistributables view and select the BDE module.
   10. Build the project.
3. Do not use the BDE Merge Module downloaded from the Internet with Express 4.0 or later. Instead use the one shipped with that version of Express. Follow the solution in Resolution 2 above to do this.
4. You must make sure that BDEDesigner.dll is installed and registered in the proper location on the development machine. Launch Windows Explorer and locate the file BDEDesigner.dll in the following directory: \Program Files\InstallShield\Express\System.
   If BDEDesigner.dll cannot be found in this location, follow these directions to install this file on the machine:
   1. Launch InstallShield Express from the Add/Remove Programs applet. This launches Express setup in maintenance mode.
   2. Click the Modify button in the Program Maintenance Dialog.
   3. Make sure that BDE Merge Module Feature and its subfeatures are selected in the Custom Setup Dialog.
      1. If it is not selected, select it and finish the setup. This installs BDEDesigner.dll.
      2. If the BDE Merge Module Feature and its subfeatures were already selected, click the Back button and select Repair. This repairs the Express setup and installs the BDEDesigner.dll file on the system.

   If the file BDEDesigner.dll exists in the desired location, but it is not properly registered, use the following command-line argument to register it on the machine:

   1. Select Start Menu > Run.
   2. Type regsvr32 <Full path to BDEDesigner.dll> to register the file.

   NOTE: In the above path should be replaced by the drive letter where Express is installed.
