Summary

When building an install with the signing features of InstallShield, warning -5032 may be encountered.

Symptoms

When building an install with the signing features of InstallShield, warning -5032 may be encountered:

SigningHelper: error 0x80090008 while attempting to sign file
ISDEV : warning -5032: Failed to sign the setup launcher.

Cause

This issue is caused by trying to build a project that uses a SHA-256 certificate on a Vista/Server 2008 machines or earlier OS. These Operating Systems do not support signing files with a SHA-256 hash and as InstallShield 2015 will use whatever the hash of the certificate is to sign the files, the build will fail.

This is a limitation of the Operating System and is not limited to InstallShield. Similar tools such as Microsoft's own signtool.exe also do not support using the /fd sha256 option on Vista or earlier machines.

Resolution

In order to remedy this issue, please build on a Windows 7 or later machine. Otherwise, configure the project to sign with a SHA-1 certificate.
