Building a Signed Release Fails with Error -1027

Summary

This article explains cause and resolution to error -1027, for InstallShield 2011 users.

Symptoms

Applies to InstallShield 2011

When a Digital Signature has been defined in the Media->Releases view, the build of the project Release fails with Error:
ISDEV : fatal error -1027: Failed signing <Installation Package File Name>

Cause

This problem is due to an issue introduced with InstallShield 2010 involving how the Certificate Password field entered in the Media->Releases view "Signing" tab is being stored in the project file.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, apply the fix that is attached to this Knowledge Base article by following the steps below:
  1. Download the attached hot fix .zip file to a temporary location.
  2. Exit the InstallShield 2011 IDE.
  3. Locate the InstallShield 2011 System folder, <ISProductFolder>\System. By default, this file is located at "C:\Program Files\InstallShield\2011\System".
  4. Create a back up copy of file IsWsBuild.ocx
  5. Extract the IsWsBuild.ocx file contained in the IsWsBuild.zip file (in the Attachment section) to the InstallShield 2011 System folder located in step 3.
  6. Open the project in InstallShield 2011.
  7. Go the the Media->Release view. Clone the original release that failed to build. Alternatively, you may delete the existing release and create a new release as well.
  8. Under the 'Signing" tab, re-define the Digital Certificate and re-enter the Certificate password. Build the new Release to apply the changes.

Workaround

Instead of applying the hot fix, one can work around the problem by performing the following (If have both InstallShield 2010 & InstallShield 2011 installed):
  1. Create the project in InstallShield 2010.
  2. Go the Media->Releases view, create a new Product Configuration and Release. Under the Release "Signing" tab, enter the Digital Certificate information.
  3. Save the project and exit InstallShield 2010
  4. Convert the project to InstallShield 2011 by opening the project with InstallShield 2011.
  5. Build the project.
Note that after converting the project to InstallShield 2011, if the Certificate Password field is edited using InstallShield 2011 and the hot fix has not been applied, the build error will reoccur.
