Summary
This article explains cause and resolution of Checkout Error -18.Synopsis
Using a different HOSTNAME in multiple license files (or multiple sections in one file) will cause checkout error -18
Discussion
For example, take the following two license files:
license1.lic
----
SERVER hostname hostid
VENDOR mvsn
VENDOR mvsn
USE_SERVER
INCREMENT IS2.win.prem....
----
license2.lic
----
SERVER xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(ip) hostid
VENDOR mvsn
USE_SERVER
VENDOR mvsn
USE_SERVER
INCREMENT IS2.win.prem.....
----
If these two license files are placed under the same folder, and the license server is started with command: lmgrd -c <folder>. It will be seen that license server can be started successfully with IS2.win.prem supported. When attempting to launch InstallShield, however, the error message "-18, License server system does not support this feature." will be seen. In server debug log, we can see error message like "(mvsn) Not master server, checkout attempt of 'IS2.win.prem' from xxxx@yyyy refused".
This problem will occur when different hostname is used in multiple license files (or in different section of same license file). In this case, the Vendor Daemon will think that this is three server redundant system, but doesn't know who is the master. To resolve the issue, the hostname on the SERVER line in each license file must be identical. Don't use machine name in some license files and IP address in others.
The issue may also be caused by using an invalid hosthame. Changing the license file?s hostname to this_host also seems to resolve the error message.
