Summary
Configure Distribution Server/Inventory Beacon to use Web Handlers for File UploadsSynopsis
By default, a Distribution Server/Inventory Beacon is configured such that when a file is uploaded by a client machine, it will attempt to write the file to the appropriate 'Incoming' folder using WebDAV. This can occasionally cause authentication problems as IIS7 no longer supports anonymous authentication for WebDAV requests. This may make file uploads difficult when the client machine may be in a different domain to the DS/IB to which it is attempting to upload.Discussion
Consequently, you may wish to configure the DS/IB to use the web handlers to process the uploads and drop them to the appropriate 'Incoming' folder for the scheduled tasks to pass them on to the Administration Server to resolve into the database. The web handlers are a .Net application which intercepts the incoming HTTP requests which renders the WebDAV requests redundant and bypasses IIS7's restriction on anonymous authentication.To do this, you need to do the following:
- When installing the DS/IB software, perform the installation by using the following command line (this example is using the Inventory Beacon installer for 9.2). Please supply a service account and password for the IMPORTWEBUSERNAME and IMPORTWEBPASSWORD switches: msiexec.exe /qb+ /l*v "%TEMP%\DSInstall.log" /i "Flexera Inventory Beacon.msi" INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files (x86)\ManageSoft" WAREHOUSEDIR="C:\ManageSoft" SCHEDUSERNAMEMODE=SYSTEM REBOOT=ReallySuppress ADDLOCAL=ALL IMPORTWEBUSERNAME=<Domain>\<ServiceAccount> IMPORTWEBPASSWORD="<ServiceAccountPassword>"
-
In IIS Manager disable all authentication types except for Anonymous Authentication on the ManageSoftRL virtual directory & verify that the service account is configured as the anonymous user identity (as instructed by the commandline options above).
-
Edit the %ProgramFiles%\ManageSoft\DotNet\Web.config file and make the following change: <add key="ImportTypesProcessedDirectly" value="logs, inventories, discovery, securityanalysis, systemstatus, usagedata, securityevent" />
To:
<add key="ImportTypesProcessedDirectly" value="none" />
-
Set the following registry key: Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ManageSoft Corp\ManageSoft\Administrator\CurrentVersion\AvailableFeatures
Name: EventLogProcessing
Value: False
Additional Information
For Inventory Beacon 9.2 only, there is one additional step:
There has been an issue (Bug# PA79498) found that did not make it into the recent 9.2 patch/service pack where the beacons at runtime attempt to do an FNMP license check by connecting to the database (normally the web handlers are on the admin server so the license check is valid there, but should not be necessary when the handlers are enabled on the beacons). To do this, please replace the %ProgramFiles%\ManageSoft\DotNet\Bin\ManageSoft.Import.Dispatcher.dll with the attached version.
