How To Set the Visual Studio Environment settings for the FlexNet Publisher Toolkit Builds On Windows

Synopsis

These are the suggested Visual Studio Environment settings needed to build the toolkit (and hence the Vendor Daemon) on 32 & 64 bit Windows.

Discussion

32 bit

• Copy the 32 bit Visual C configuration file, vcvars32.bat, from the (standard) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VC\bin directory to the platform (i86_n3) directory.
• Note this is for Visual Studio 2010, adapt as necessary for other versions
• Open a standard command prompt window
• Change directory to the i86_n3 location
• Run vcvars32.bat
• Enter ?nmake all?

64 bit

• Startup a command prompt using the x64 environment ?> Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 -> Visual Studio Tools -> Visual Studio x64 Win64 Command Prompt (2010)
• (Adapt as required for the Visual Studio Version)
• Change to the platform directory (x64_n6) and enter ?nmake all?.

Additional Information

The compatibility for Visual Studio versions is provided by the Microsoft backward compatibility rules. That is to say that objects created with a particular version of VS can be linked in to applications using the same or later versions. So for example, if you consider a version of lm_new.obj (which is created when you build the toolkit) that was created using VS2010, this can be linked in with projects using VS2010, VS2012, VS2013 & VS2015, but not VS2005 or VS2008.

Also as an example, for the 11.13.1 release our libraries were built with VS2008, so they can be used in projects using VS2008 - VS2015, but not VS2005.
