This article explains the cause and resolution for IISRT runtime error -2172.Symptoms
- Installer aborts after attempting to install Virtual Roots or Application Pools
- Information such as the following is contained in a verbose log of the installation:

1: Error with IISRT: -2172Cause
This runtime error is caused by an incorrect version populated in the "ASP .NET Version" field or an incorrect platform populated in the "ASP. NET Platform" field for a Web Site or Virtual Directory in the Internet Information Services view. The information populated in these fields is used to construct a path to the aspnet_regiis.exe file launched during install to adjust the ASP.NET version for a Web Site, Virtual Directory or Application Pool being installed.
Error -2172 will occur during install if the Application Pool's "Enable 32-Bit Application" setting conflicts with the Web Site's "ASP .NET Platform" setting.
Resolution
The full .NET framework version should be used in the "ASP .NET Version" field. For example, if a Virtual Directory is intended to use .NET 1.1, the version provided should be 1.1.4322. If the ASP.NET version for a Virtual Directory is intended to be 2.0, the version 2.0.50727 should be used.
Verify the Web Site's "ASP .NET Platform" setting is appropriately set for the Application Pool's "Enable 32-Bit Applications" setting.
