Summary
This article is regarding the InstallShield 11.5 Hotfix for issues with Update 2, .NET Installer Class Support, CopyFile/XCopyFile, Activating InstallShield Collaboration, and Visual Studio IntegrationSymptoms
-
When an installation attempts to call an Installer class that was built with Visual Studio 2005 and that uses .NET 2.0, run-time error 1001 occurs. In addition, .NET 1.1 Installer classes also encounter error 1001 if the .NET 2.0 version of InstallUtilLib.dll is used. (The InstallUtilLib.dll location is specified on the .NET tab of the Options dialog box. This dialog box is available form the Tools menu.) (Issue IOC-000043943)
- In some cases, calling CopyFile or XCopyFile when the file does not exist in the source location causes the installation to exit without any error messages or warnings. (Issue IOC-000044506)
- After you have installed Update 2 for InstallShield 11.5, InstallScript installations may not install files to the appropriate Program Files Folder on 64-bit target machines. (Issue IOC-000045752)
- Activating InstallShield Collaboration Prior to InstallShield 11.5 Causes Activation Failure
- Several issues occur when InstallShield is run from within Visual Studio 2005. For example:
- No strings in any string tables are visible. (IOC-000045827)
- The Generate GUID button does not work. Clicking this button to change a code does nothing. (IOC-000045829)
- The Property Manager, the Distribute view, and the Path Variables view do not work.
- The Use Default Product Version property in the Update Service view does not work.
- The Custom Action Wizard does not work.
- Launching the Transform Wizard from the Create/Apply Transform button does not work.
- The links in the Project Summary view for smart devices do not work.
Cause
-
A bug prevented x.0 versions of .NET from using the configfile argument in the CustomActionData property. This argument is required for all versions of .NET after 1.0.
- The error handling that occurs if the file is not found is not working properly.
- Update 2 for InstallShield 11.5 introduced a bug.
- A file was missing from the InstallShield Collaboration part of the installation.
- Visual Studio 2005 introduced new security settings that were not used with earlier versions of Visual Studio.
Resolution
Download and execute the hotfix to resolve the issues listed in the Symptoms section of this article. After this hotfix is applied to InstallShield 11.5:
- Run-time error 1001 will not occur under the circumstances described above.
- If the file to be copied with CopyFile or XCopyFile cannot be found, a message box is displayed to inform the end user about the missing file.
- InstallScript installations install files to the appropriate Program Files Folder on 64-bit target machines.
- Product can be activated.
- Most of the issues with running InstallShield from within Visual Studio 2005 no longer occur. The following issues may still occur:
- The String Table Editor tab is still missing from the lower-right pane if you are entering a value in one of the fields in a property grid. However, as a workaround, you can edit any of the strings by accessing the String Table Editor from within the General Information view.
- The Custom Action Wizard issue may still occur. As a workaround, custom actions can be created in the Custom Actions view without using the wizard.
- Launching the Transform Wizard from the Create/Apply Transform button does not work.
Workaround
As a workaround for the Visual Studio 2005 integration issues that still exist after this hotfix is applied, you can use InstallShield to create your installation and then open the project from within Visual Studio.
To open an InstallShield project from within Visual Studi
- On the File menu, point to Open, and click Project. The Open Project dialog box opens.
- Browse to the InstallShield file you want to open, and select it.
- Click Open.
