InstallShield ignores some errors in SQL scripts

Summary

A SQL script error does not force the installer to abort based on logic errors in the SQL query.

Symptoms

Installation of a project with SQL scripts does not abort, when an error is encountered because of logic errors in the SQL query. Using InstallShield SQL Scripts view to configure a script to run with "on error, abort installation". However, in some cases, a SQL script error does not force the installer to abort. This is known to occur when an error is encountered because of logic errors in the SQL query.

In one example a stored procedure runs into an error. If that stored procedure is called just once and triggers an error, then the installer detects the error correctly and aborts. However, if you call that same stored procedure multiple times in the same SQL batch, and it only fails some of the times, then the error is missed and the Installer proceeds as if nothing went wrong.

Cause

Cause unknown and the situation considered an issue with InstallShield. The InstallShield issue is being tracked as Master Issue Number: IOJ-1625174.

Steps To Reproduce

Create a Basic MSI project.
Under Server configuration->SQL scripts, create a new SQL connection and add a script.
In the script tab, add an alter table query to include a column, which already exists in the table of a database.
In the runtime tab, script error handling section, select "On Error, Abort Installation" option.

Expected Result: Installation should abort since the column already exists.

Actual Result: Installation completes, but no change is made to the database.

Workaround

One of the workarounds known to handle this situation is to include all the SQL statements with GO statement (batch processing). This is expected to capture all the errors and abort the installation.
