Synopsis

This article describes how both the LaunchAnywhere launchers and the Choose Java VM Panel search the target machine for a valid JVM. The runtime JVM search, used by the Choose Java VM Panel for example, was updated to be more customizable in InstallAnywhere 2009. The white paper linked to in the additional information section below explains this updated strategy in more detail. However, the installer launcher will still use the search strategy outlined below.

Both the installer launcher and the runtime JVM search will use the following to locate a valid JVM:
Environment Variable
  • PATH
Registry Keys
  • SOFTWARE\\JavaSoft\\Java Development Kit
  • SOFTWARE\\JavaSoft\\Java Runtime Environment
  • SOFTWARE\\IBM\\Java2 Runtime Environment
  • SOFTWARE\\IBM\\Java Development Kit

Unix Operating Systems
The installer launcher will use the following:
Environment Variable
  • PATH
File System Paths
  • /usr/xpg4/bin
  • /bin
  • /usr/bin
  • /sbin
  • /usr/sbin
  • /usr/local/bin

The runtime JVM search will use the following:
Environment Variable
  • PATH
File System Paths
  • /bin
  • /usr/bin
  • /usr/local/bin
  • /opt
  • /opt/gnu/bin
  • /usr/gnu/bin
