Summary

Why is the Size Column in Add/Remove Programs No Longer Populated in Windows 7?

Symptoms

Project Type = Installscript

When running an InstallScript setup on Windows 7, no size estimate appears in Add/Remove Programs.


Cause

This behavior occurs due to a change in functionality with how Microsoft calculates the estimated size on Windows 7. Microsoft documents this in greater detail on this blog post. This problem is specific to the InstallScript project type, and will continue to work successfully with InstallScript MSI or Basic MSI project types.

Resolution

To resolve this for the InstallScript project type, it's necessary to manually create an 'EstimatedSize' registry key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{PRODUCT_CODE]. Microsoft now exclusively uses this key to populate the estimated size value in Add/Remove Programs.
Sample code to accomplish this is listed below:
RegDBSetDefaultRoot(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE);
RegDBSetKeyValueEx("SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Uninstall\\{PRODUCT_CODE}","EstimatedSize",REGDB_NUMBER,"1000",-1);
If using the above code, simply make the following changes:
  1. Replace {PRODUCT_CODE} with the specific product code of your InstallScript project. Example: {B26E76B1-8EA1-45B8-AE7C-01D50EA7FAEA}
  2. Replace '1000' with the desired size in KB. Example: 1000 KB will appear as slightly less than 1 MB
  3. If you'd like this key deleted on uninstall, you'll need to also add a call to RegDBDeleteKey in a separate event.
