In an InstallAnywhere project, there is an action named ?Restart Windows?. By default, this action has two rules applied to it which check the values of the following variables:

$RESTART_NEEDED$

$USER_REQUESTED_RESTART$

The Restart Windows action is activated only if $RESTART_NEEDED$ contains a YES and $USER_REQUESTED_RESTART$ does not contain a NO.

During an uninstallation, the uninstaller will determine whether or not the system needs to be restarted, and if it is necessary, it will set the $RESTART_NEEDED$ accordingly.

Typically, when a locked file/directory is encountered a reboot will be required. This happens either when attempting to delete a file/folder, or when trying to copy a file/folder to another locked file/folder. Thus, if the uninstaller is trying to remove a file/folder that is being used during the uninstall, this could set the $RESTART_NEEDED$ to YES_REQUIRED. For example, let?s say the uninstaller is trying to remove a java application that was installed by the product installer. If the application is still running during uninstallation, this will set the $RESTART_NEEDED$ to YES_REQUIRED.

In this case, a file with the same name as the product ID (from Project > General Settings > Product Code) might get created in the temp folder. Then, if the product is reinstalled and the uninstaller is launched, the presence of this file in the temp folder will cause the following error at the beginning of the uninstall.

Rebooting the system or deleting the file (if the file with the same name as the Product ID exists) from the temp directory will get rid of the above dialog box.

A ?Show Message Dialog? action can be placed in the project to see the value of $RESTART_NEEDED$.
