On certain Linux distributions, files intended for the /tmp directory may be relocated to a private directory by system services. This configuration can affect workflows that upload or copy files or run commands in the /tmp path. The steps below describe how to modify the relevant service configuration to allow writing to /tmp for these workflows.
-
Confirm that your Linux distribution is Red Hat or a derivative, such as CentOS or ClearOS, as these systems implement the behavior where files are moved into a path similar to /tmp/Systemd-private-%algorithm%-Servicename/tmp/%yourfiles%.
-
Locate the service configuration file for the relevant process.
- For vCommander, the service used is
vmtoolsd.service. - The file path is
/lib/systemd/system/vmtoolsd.service.
- For vCommander, the service used is
- View the contents of the configuration file using the
catcommand:cat /lib/systemd/system/vmtoolsd.service -
Open the file with a text editor such as
viornano:- Change the entry from:
to:PrivateTmp=truePrivateTmp=false
- Change the entry from:
-
Save your changes and verify that the updated configuration persists by viewing the file contents again.
-
Restart the Linux VM where you applied this change.
- After the restart, you can successfully write to the
/tmpdirectory using vCommander workflows such as the upload file step, copy file step, or run program step.
- After the restart, you can successfully write to the

The
/tmp directory is accessible for workflow operations after disabling the private temporary directory for the relevant service. Ensure that you understand any security implications before applying this change. Was this helpful?
