You may see the error “snapshotId cannot be modified on the root device” when working with a virtual node group in a Flexera Ocean cluster. This issue usually occurs when you update a VNG to use a new AMI, but its block device mapping for the root volume still references the old snapshot ID from the previous AMI. Because each AMI defines its own root snapshot, EC2 treats the outdated snapshot reference as invalid—you can’t override the root snapshot defined by the new AMI.
Updating or removing the snapshot ID in the virtual node group resolves the issue.
-
In the Flexera console, go to Ocean > Cloud Clusters and select your cluster.
-
Select the Virtual Node Groups tab.
-
Choose the virtual node group you want to edit.
-
Select JSON to view the configuration.
-
In the blockDeviceMappings section, edit or remove the
snapshotIdvalue. For example:"blockDeviceMappings": [ { "deviceName": "/dev/xvda", "ebs": { "deleteOnTermination": true, "encrypted": false, "iops": 3000, "throughput": 125, "snapshotId": "snap-1234", "volumeSize": 100, "volumeType": "GP3" } } ] -
Select Save to apply the change.
After you save the JSON update, the virtual node group accepts the configuration without triggering the snapshot ID error.
