Get the AMI ID for an EKS‑optimized Amazon Linux image

Title

You can use the AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store API to retrieve the latest recommended EKS‑optimized Amazon Linux AMI ID. This removes the need to manually look up AMIs whenever you deploy new nodes.

Instructions

Make sure your IAM role has permission to retrieve the AMI metadata.\
- The IAM principal you’re using must include the ssm:GetParameter permission.
Choose the AMI type that fits your instance architecture.
- Replace the ami-type placeholder with one of the following options:
  - amazon-linux-2023/x86_64/standard for Amazon Linux 2023 x86 instances
  - amazon-linux-2023/arm64/standard for Amazon Linux 2023 ARM instances
  - amazon-linux-2023/x86_64/nvidia for NVIDIA x86 instances
  - amazon-linux-2023/arm64/nvidia for NVIDIA ARM instances
  - amazon-linux-2023/x86_64/neuron for AWS Neuron instances
Run the AWS CLI command to get the AMI ID.
- Replace the placeholders in the command:
  - <kubernetes-version> with a supported EKS version
  - <ami-type> with the AMI type you selected
  - <region-code> with the AWS Region you want to deploy in

aws ssm get-parameter --name /aws/service/eks/optimized-ami/<kubernetes-version>/<ami-type>/recommended/image_id \ --region <region-code> --query "Parameter.Value" --output text
```

aws ssm get-parameter --name /aws/service/eks/optimized-ami/1.31/amazon-linux-2023/x86_64/standard/recommended/image_id \ --region us-west-2 --query "Parameter.Value" --output text
