This issue is caused by a software defect that has been resolved for Commander versions 9.0.0 and later, so the most likely circumstance for you to encounter this issue is during an upgrade from Commander 8.x to Commander 9.x. Changes to the SQL driver used in the later versions make the installer more sensitive to issues with instance names or non-standard ports, and the safest way to correct these is to use the Control Panel, so upgrading to a Commander version that does not include this defect is required. Once you can open the Control Panel, you will be able to address the instance name or other issues.
Follow the procedure below:
- Download Commander 8.10.6.
- Upgrade to 8.10.6 following Snow's Best Practices for Commander Upgrades.
- Open the Control Panel from the Snow Commander program group to correct the instance name. Refer to the KB article "SQL Browser Service Must be Running" Error When Upgrading to Commander 9.0 or Above.
