When adding a new domain to Okta for identity provider (IDP) configuration, domain ownership verification is required, typically by adding a DNS TXT record. In some cases, domain verification may fail with a generic error, even when the DNS record is correctly configured.
You may see an error similar to:

This can occur if the regular expression (regex) used in the IDP filter configuration exceeds Okta’s maximum supported length. When the regex becomes too long (for example, due to a large number of domains or complex patterns), Okta may return a generic "Internal Server Error" (E0000009) during domain verification.
Option 1: Create a new IDP
If the existing IDP configuration exceeds the regex length limit:
- Remove the affected domain from the current IDP configuration.
- Create a new identity provider (IDP).
- Add the domain to the new IDP.
- Proceed with domain verification.
Splitting domains across multiple IDPs reduces the regex length and avoids exceeding the limit.
Option 2: Manual domain verification
If you do not have access to modify DNS records, contact your organization’s DNS or Okta administrator to complete the verification process and provide the following details:
- Domain name
- Organization ID (OrgID), if applicable
- Reason manual verification is required
