When using the Commander REST API to automate tasks, a 500 Server Error may occur when starting a workflow. This error often results from missing permissions or incorrect workflow visibility settings.
1. Verify user permissions
- Ensure the user has the Run Command Workflows permission enabled.
- Navigate to:
Configuration → Identity and Access → Service Portal Roles - By default, the built-in Service Portal roles (Customer, Delegated Admin, and Manager) include this permission.
NOTE: A View Only portal user does not have this permission. Without it, the user cannot run command workflows through the portal or API.
2. Confirm workflow availability
- Ensure the workflow is available for Service Portal users by enabling its display setting:
- Open the workflow settings.
- Select Display in Service Portal.
These steps make the workflow visible to Service Portal users with the required permission.
For Service Portal users to successfully run command workflows via the REST API:
- The Run Command Workflows permission must be enabled in the user’s portal role.
- The workflow must be set to Display in Service Portal.
Enabling both resolves the 500 Server Error during API calls.
