This article explains how files are transferred from a ServiceNow MID Server to Data Platform for processing. It outlines the protocols used based on system configuration and provides guidance on SMB protocol versions and encryption support.
How file transfers work
When exporting data from a ServiceNow instance via a MID Server, Data Platform retrieves those files from the MID Server’s export folder. The method of access depends on whether Data Platform and the MID Server are on the same machine or separate systems:
- Different machines (remote access):
Data Platform uses the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol over TCP/IP or NetBIOS to access the shared folder on the MID Server. - Same machine (local access):
Data Platform accesses the folder directly using the Windows API (NTFS). No network protocol is involved in this case.
SMB protocol and encryption support
The level of encryption during SMB communication depends on the version of the protocol in use:
|
SMB version |
Encryption support |
Notes |
|
SMB 3.0+ |
Enabled by default |
Recommended for secure environments |
|
SMB 2.0 |
Optional (manual setup) |
Encryption must be explicitly configured |
|
SMB 1.0 |
Not supported |
Deprecated due to security vulnerabilities |
NOTE: SMB 1.0 is not recommended and should be disabled in most environments.
How to check the SMB version
To determine the SMB version supported by your system, run the following PowerShell command:
Get-SmbServerConfiguration
This will display the current SMB configuration, including supported versions and encryption settings.
