When a workload migration is in progress, you may see unhealthy instances in your EKS cluster. These instances aren’t replaced immediately. This behavior is expected and helps prevent interruptions while your workloads move to new nodes.
How unhealthy replacements behave during migration
Ocean pauses unhealthy instance replacements during an active workload migration. The autoscaler doesn’t terminate or replace nodes while pods are still moving between instances. This prevents pod disruption and ensures that existing workloads migrate safely without losing capacity.
What happens when no migration is active
When there’s no active workload migration, unhealthy instances follow the standard replacement flow:
- After the configured unhealthy duration passes (120 seconds by default)
- Ocean terminates the unhealthy node
- A new instance is launched immediately to replace it
This ensures your cluster stays healthy once migrations are complete.
