Symptoms

When upgrading App Portal, an ?Access Denied when updating web.config file? error may be encountered when running the App Portal upgrader executable.

Error Encountered: Access Denied when updating web.config file

Cause

App Portal makes a WMI call to the SCCM server during the upgrade process and if the App Portal upgrader account does not have permissions to make the WMI call, an Access Denied error will be encountered.

Resolution

The upgrader account needs to have at least ?Application Administrator? permissions within SCCM.
