Summary
This Knowledge Base article explains the location of the temp directory used by platform and approximately how much space is required.Synopsis
The first step when launching an installer created by InstallAnywhere is the installer launcher extracting its contents to a temporary directory. This Knowledge Base article explains the location of the temp directory on each platform and approximately how much space is used.Discussion
The temp directory used by InstallAnywhere, listed by platform, is as follows:
Windows
InstallAnywhere extracts to the Windows "temp" directory. This is the directory specified by the TEMP environment variable. The self extractor checks for free disk space 3x the size of the installer on the volume where the temp directory is located. If enough free space is not available, the installer will prompt the user for an alternate location for extraction.
For instance, if the installer is 10 MB, and TEMP is set to C:\Temp, the Installer will check for 30 MB of free space on the C: drive. If there is not 30 MB of free space, the installer will prompt for another location to extract.
Once the install has successfully completed or been canceled by the user, the temp space will be freed and only a single directory holding a single file about 35 KB in size (remove.exe) will remain.
UNIX
On Unix, InstallAnywhere extracts to the /tmp directory. The self extractor checks for adequate free disk space on the volume where the /tmp directory is located. On Unix, the installer does not prompt to pick another location; however, the IATEMPDIR environment variable may be manually set to a location with sufficient temp space.
Once the install has successfully completed or been canceled by the user, the temporary resources used by the installer will be deleted.
MacOS
On the Mac, installers search for free space on any mounted volume with write permissions. The installer will install each component (the mrj installer and the java installer) to the first volume it can find with enough free disk space. If the installer cannot find enough free space, it will present the user with an error message. At the end of the install, all temporary files are moved to the trash.
Pure-Java Installer
There is no pre-install self-extraction. The installer runs from the .jar file.
